There is basically one story about how Americans in the region around Angola and Hamilton have been discovering the Acapulco Grills in this century, with the establishments in both locations sending satisfied customers away who spread the praise by word of mouth.
There are many testimonies regarding the restaurants on Internet sites, and along with good experiences involving the food, the service and the prices, many say Acapulco has one of the best margaritas they have ever had.
Hamilton manager Jose Luna said while the Mexican fare is authentic, it is not the authentic people will find south of the border, with many dishes adjusted to be more compatible with American tastes.
But for sure, those who like it hot, can get it hot.
One can get the Chiles Poblanos, Pollo A La Palapa, or have the Carne Asada or Carnitas and know they are engaging in a Mexican meal.
There is a long list of burritos, enchiladas and tacos on the menu, along with quesadillas, chimichangass and fajitas. Combos ara available, and while there are nachos for appetizers, the list also includes, along with the obligatory queso and guacamole dips, chicken wings that Luna said — with a smile — are actually more like Louisiana cooking.
The steaks get good reviews, and if the kids want pizza, they can get pizza.
There are lunch specials Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Luna is particularly proud of the Sunday buffet, that is put out for patrons from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The brunch is so large, the dining room has to be rearranged to accommodate all the breakfast and other items, including succulent dessert items. The brunch also includes a salad bar, and ample vegetables.
Acapulco began as a family operation in Indianapolis, and years ago came to Fort Wayne.
The grills were fired up at the Angola restaurant, near Lake James, four years ago, and the Hamilton eatery has been in operation about a year.
Luna said they get a lot of people from Auburn and Fort Wayne at Hamilton, and a lot of people from Michigan and Ohio at Angola.
It is a demanding business, that of restaurants, but Luna said he does not mind the hard work, sometimes all day long, and that he will come in on days off if need be.
He likes and enjoys the business.
“It’s very rewarding,” he said.
